The living-room TV feature wall is the "face" of a home. A marble wall reads as grand and luxurious with its natural veining, but a small design or installation slip turns it into a disaster: mismatched veins, light glare on the screen, or later delamination. This guide covers bookmatch principles, measurement, lighting, dry-hanging vs adhesive fixing, and the most common pitfalls.
Seven tenths of a beautiful marble wall is slab selection and veining match, three tenths is lighting and fixing. For bookmatch buy slabs from the same block, cut consecutively; use indirect light at about 3000K; for large walls prefer dry-hanging, small panels can be glued but the substrate must be perfect. Never cheap out on an inexperienced installer — a botched vein match can't be undone.
Bookmatch principle: why it pops
Bookmatch means slicing a single marble block consecutively like turning book pages into thin slabs, then placing two adjacent slabs side by side (or top and bottom) so the veining mirrors symmetrically, forming a commanding "butterfly" or "landscape" pattern down the middle. Printed tiles can't copy this because natural marble veining is continuous and three-dimensional. To bookmatch you must buy consecutively numbered slabs from the same block — never mix batches, or the veins and even the colour won't align.
Measurement: from wall to slab
Measuring a feature wall is more than length and width. First measure the clear wall (minus skirting and cornice), then plan together with the TV size, sound system and wall-mount positions; then decide slab size — large slabs impress but are harder to transport and install, small slabs match easily but have more joints. Lighting: balance beauty and use
There are three ways to light a marble wall. First, grazing light: a linear fixture at top or bottom sweeps light across the stone surface, highlighting its relief texture and depth. Second, indirect light: a hidden cove lights the wall periphery without hitting the TV. Third, avoid downlights that glare directly on the TV area, or you get a bright halo and reflection at night. Colour temperature around 2700K–3000K warm white shows marble's warmth; high CRI keeps the stone colour true, not yellow. Remember marble reflects — too much light turns it into a mirror wall.
Dry-hanging vs adhesive fixing: which?
There are two main ways to install a marble wall. Dry-hanging drills expansion bolts into the wall, fits stainless brackets, and the slab — slotted at the back — hangs on them, leaving an air gap. Benefits: clear load path, no later delamination, removable/replaceable, moisture-resistant (the air layer separates wall damp). Downsides: takes depth, costlier, needs a solid wall. Adhesive fixing (marble or structural glue directly to wall) is cheap, thin and fast, but needs a flat, dry, solid substrate, and because marble micro-expands, edges can later bulge. Generally large slabs (over 2.4m tall or over 1.5㎡) and exterior or wet zones strongly favour dry-hanging; small decorative panels can be glued.

Common pitfalls (avoid these)
First, vein mismatch: cheaping out on mixed-batch slabs or a wrong layout turns bookmatch into "wrong-match". Second, light glare on the TV from downlights hitting the screen. Third, gluing onto an uneven wall, causing hollows and later delamination. Fourth, no expansion gap, so thermal movement cracks the edges. Fifth, picking a high-absorption marble without sealing near a window or damp wall, leading to mould and discolouration. Sixth, an installer who doesn't know marble chips the edge when slotting or miscalculates brackets, forcing a redo. Slab selection and care tips
For feature walls pick marbles with bold, unified veining and consistent base colour (e.g. grey marble, Carrara white, Nero Portoro) and avoid busy scattered patterns that read as messy. If the home is near a window with western sun, note marble may yellow slightly under long UV exposure — choose a stable variety or apply UV-resistant protection. Apply penetrating sealer before installation; afterwards a slightly damp cloth for dust is enough, no acidic cleaners. Every year or two ask a master to inspect brackets and joints.
