But a marble stair is not off-the-shelf — it needs per-step measuring, cutting, layout, edge work, plus slip resistance and handrail coordination, far more complex than flat flooring. Never "just tile" a marble stair: uneven sizes, varying risers, sharp un-edged nosings and no slip grip mean slips and falls. These details decide if the stair is "stunning" or "dangerous".
Why marble stairs are custom, not ready-made
Every home's stair well, step count, turn and ceiling height differ; marble is natural stone needing matched veining and precise size, so it must be cut to the site. Ready tiles are uniform and, forced onto a stair, give uneven risers, messy joints and un-finished nosings. Tread and riser dimensions
Stair comfort comes from the tread (what you step on) and riser (vertical face between steps) ratio. Common Hong Kong homes use tread depth about 280–320mm and riser about 150–180mm — comfortable and within usual stair dimension norms; over 180mm risers are taxing and risky, especially for elderly and kids. Riser height must be uniform down the whole stair — varying heights make your foot "forget" and misstep. Marble treads often have an extended nosing (20–30mm) for looks and footing. Marble tread thickness and substrate
Marble tread slabs are usually 20–30mm; if cantilevered or long-span (one side on wall, one side floating), thicken to 30mm or add a backing board to stop bounce and long-term flex cracking. Risers can be thinner (18–20mm) as they carry no load. Marble is soft (Mohs ~3) and the nosing wears most, so the nosing needs a bevel, never a sharp right angle, or a metal edge guard. Anti-slip grooves: what is safest
A polished marble surface is slippery in rain or slippers, so the tread nosing must be slip-treated. Two common methods: first, grooving — 1–2 fine machine grooves (about 2–3mm deep) at the front add friction, cheap and easy to clean; second, inlaid strip — a groove holds brass, stainless or anti-slip rubber strip, wearable and premium, common in luxury homes. Both go at the nosing, never mid-tread (it trips). Wet-area stairs (roof, garden entry, poolside) make slip strips a safety red line, never skipped. Dark marble with brass strip also becomes a design accent.
Spiral staircase layout: the curvy challenge
A spiral staircase is the hardest marble stair type — every tread is a fan shape, narrow inside and wide outside, twisting angle by angle; a small veining or size error shows crooked. Method: first lay out on site with templates or 3D, drawing each fan tread's size and twist, then CNC-cut at the factory. Watch: inner tread width must not be too narrow (unstable footing); outer overhang needs enough support; riser height consistent bottom to top; centre column connection seats reserved. Edge work and handrail coordination
Half the stair's looks is the edge. Marble tread sides (visible) must be polished or edged, never left rough-cut; gaps between tread and wall filled with edge trim or stone chips to avoid dust and pests. For handrails, marble stairs usually pair with timber, stainless or glass balustrade — baluster seats must be reserved at layout, never drill after laying (drilling marble chips edges). Glass balustrade needs nosing seats for the glass; timber handrail needs fixing points. Plan edges and handrail together for a seamless stair.
Hong Kong notes: fire and safety
Hong Kong stairs involve fire and safety; pretty marble stairs must still meet basics. First, escape-route stairs cannot use over-slippery surfaces — slip strips complete. Second, no trip hazards between tread and riser. Third, nosing glare must not be too strong (polished marble in low sun reflects) — use honed or slip-treated if needed. Fourth, keep clear stair width; marble edge must not eat the passage. Estate or commercial public stairs also meet fire code — check with management before ordering.
Maintenance
Marble stairs are stepped on daily, so maintain well. Mop weekly with a damp microfibre and neutral cleaner; no acid/alkali cleaners (they etch). Brush slip grooves to clear grit; re-seal every 1–2 years to cut absorption and yellowing. Repair chipped nosings early with stone adhesive or replace, don't let them grow. Check handrail screws periodically. Well kept, a marble stair stays sharp for over a decade.
