The R-value slip standard: what R9 to R13 means
In the trade, slip resistance most often follows the German DIN 51130 standard, using an R value (R9 to R13) for the slip grade measured on an inclined plane. R9 is the lowest (roughly acceptable for barefoot or dry areas), R10 medium, and R11, R12, R13 progressively more slip-resistant, typically used in commercial kitchens, ramps and outdoor wet areas. Simply: the higher the R value, the steeper the slope needed to slip, i.e. safer. Polished marble (especially after crystallisation) has a low R value, about R9 or lower, so wet zones must never use plain polished marble. Note the R value is a lab standard — actual grip also depends on dirt, cleaner residue and water-film thickness, so a single number is not a guarantee.
Wet-zone requirements: how high an R value for bath and kitchen
The most dangerous spots in a Hong Kong home are the bathroom and shower. General advice: dry walking areas in the bathroom at least R10; shower trays and bath edges — constantly wet, barefoot areas — best at R11 or above; kitchen work areas, though shod, get water and oil and also warrant R10. Homes with elderly should raise the bar further; the shower could even use R12-rated slip surfaces. Outdoor terraces and pool edges, permanently wet and exposed, need even higher R values accounting for sun and algae. Their biggest advantage is "no ageing" — however many years pass or how often you mop, the grooves keep working; and they can be applied locally to high-risk spots like the shower and bath edge while the rest stays polished. The downside is grooves trap dirt and need more frequent cleaning, but compared with coatings needing re-application every year or two, grooves are more effortless long-term. Anti-slip coatings (slip paints, penetrating slip liquids) are another common method: a chemical is applied to etch micro-roughness or add a nano-layer that increases friction and raises the R value. Benefits are fast application, no grooves, and appearance close to the original stone — especially convenient as a retrofit on already-laid marble. But the downsides are clear: effect fades with time and cleaning, usually re-applied every 1–2 years; some products slightly dull the marble surface and can affect later crystallisation; wrong strong-acid products may even etch the stone. So coatings suit "reinforcement" rather than being the only wet-zone defence — elderly homes are better based on physical methods like grooves.
How marble surface finish affects slip resistance
The same marble slab slips very differently by finish. Polished (glossy) is slickest, worse after crystallisation; honed (matte, fine-ground or acid-washed) has more friction; the most slip-resistant are sandblasted, bush-hammered and flamed finishes, whose R value can be several grades above polished — but they sacrifice the mirror shine. The practical move is "zoned finishing": dry areas like living room and entrance use polished for prestige; wet areas like bathroom and kitchen use honed or local sandblasting and grooves.
