In Hong Kong, building facades, garden paving, mall plazas and civic works frequently use granite. Why? Because granite is hard, low-absorption and shrugs off acid rain and sun. But there are many granite varieties, and surface finishes (flamed, bush-hammered, axe-cut) affect slip resistance and look — pick wrong and you get a slippery or short-lived surface. This guide walks through hardness, absorption, slip finishes, freeze-thaw and acid rain so you can choose outdoor stone with confidence.
Rule one for outdoor stone: do not use marble on exposed surfaces. Marble is calcium carbonate — it fears acid and moisture and is soft; granite is igneous, hard and acid-resistant, so it is the right pick for facades, paving, landscape and civic edges. And a slip-resistant finish is mandatory, or rain becomes a hazard.
Why outdoor works pick granite over marble
Hong Kong is hot, humid, with occasional acid rain and constant UV — outdoor materials take a beating. Marble's Mohs hardness is only about 3, the surface is soft, and acids (acid rain, lemon, some cleaners) etch it chalky; being calcium carbonate, it dulls and yellows outdoors. Granite is different: an igneous rock with Mohs 6–7, density 2.6–2.8 g/cm³, dense structure, essentially acid- and sun-proof — so facades, plazas, garden paths and kerbstones are all granite. Simply put: marble for indoor decoration, granite for anything exposed.
Hardness and density: why granite lasts
Granite is mostly quartz, feldspar and mica — all hard minerals. Mohs 6–7 means it withstands years of foot-traffic grit, trolleys and ordinary knocks without chipping. Density 2.6–2.8 g/cm³ makes it solid; compressive strength typically 100–250 MPa, stable under walking, vehicles and furniture in public spaces. Marble, while similar in density, is far too soft and looks worn outdoors within two years. Hardness and density are the physical backbone of granite's outdoor performance.
Absorption and stain resistance: the numbers tell
Granite absorption is usually only 0.1–0.4%, meaning rain barely penetrates. That matters for facades and paving — no water in, no black stains, moss or freeze expansion. Marble can absorb 0.5–2%, so wet outdoor spots cause trouble. Still, low absorption is not "do nothing": a protective sealer before laying (especially light varieties like sesame white) keeps the surface easier to rinse and dust-free. On price, granite material runs about HK$80–$300 per sq ft by variety (sesame white, Shanxi black, Brazil gold, blue pearl) and origin; with laying and sealing about HK$200–$600/ft. Slip finishes: flamed, bush-hammered, axe-cut
Polished granite is like ice when wet, so outdoor must be slip-finished. Three common ones: first, flamed — a torch heats the surface so minerals burst into a micro-rough texture; good grip and cheap, the go-to for outdoor floors, stairs and plazas. Second, bush-hammered — a needle plate gives a dotted, lychee-skin texture; better grip and look than flamed, a bit pricier, used in premium landscape and entrances. Third, axe-cut (chiselled) — hand axe grooves for a rustic feel, common on walls, landscape features and Chinese-style design. There are also natural split and acid-washed finishes. Bottom line: where people walk and it gets wet, never skip the slip finish.
Facade: dry-hang vs wet-bed
Outdoor granite facades use two main methods. Dry-hanging (curtain wall) fixes granite panels to a steel frame with stainless brackets, leaving an air gap behind that resists damp and seismic movement — safest for high-rise facades, panels usually 25–30mm or thicker. Wet-bedding sticks granite with cement mortar: lower cost, faster, good for low walls, skirting and landscape walls; but watch for hollow beds and later seepage. Either way, granite facades need a waterproof base and expansion joints to avoid thermal cracking. Hong Kong's windy rainy seasons demand weather- and mould-resistant joint sealant.
Paving and landscape: how to lay for durability
Garden paths, terraces, pool edges and mall plazas usually use 20–30mm flamed granite on mortar or dry-bed. Garden paths can use granite offcuts (crazy paving) or sized tiles for a natural anti-slip look; terraces and plazas use large format tiles with neat joints that are easy to clean. Key points: the floor must slope to drain, never pond; leave 3–5mm joints filled with sand or grout so stones have a little movement. Landscape walls, planter edges and water-feature copings can use axe-cut or bush-hammered finishes for depth and harmony.
Civic and public spaces: which variety
Kerbstones, plaza paving, MTR exits and public sitting-out areas see heavy footfall and sometimes vehicles, so pick hard, colour-stable granite. Common choices are sesame white (G603), sesame black (G654), Shanxi black, grey granite (e.g. Mongolian black, sesame grey) — dark granite hides dirt and wears well, lowest maintenance. Paving slabs are usually 30–50mm, thicker or reinforced where vehicles pass. Civic works stress spec and safety: slab size, slip coefficient and finish type must meet standards, with a sample confirmed before works.
Freeze-thaw and acid rain: should Hong Kong worry?
Freeze-thaw means water enters seams, freezes and expands overnight, melts by day, and repeats until the surface spalls. Hong Kong is subtropical — winter rarely hits zero, freeze-thaw cycles are rare, so local outdoor granite barely risks spalling. But for high-altitude or severe-cold projects, choose low-absorption granite, apply sealer and leave expansion joints. As for acid rain, Hong Kong's occasional acidic rain etches marble but hardly touches granite's silicate structure. So yes, granite clearly outlasts marble against acid.
Maintenance tips for Hong Kong weather
Outdoor granite is low-maintenance but not zero-care. Rinse with water and a neutral cleaner every six months to remove dust and salt; if light granite (Brazil gold, sesame white) dulls, re-apply sealer. Shady mossy spots: soft brush with diluted bleach, then rinse — never soak in strong acid or alkali. Replace chipped or cracked pieces early to stop spread. With basic care, granite facades and paving still look good after a decade-plus.
